About Defence

What is the defence sector?

Defence in the UK includes the Armed Forces (Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force) and MOD Civilian staff. The forces defend the country and support operations; MOD civilians work in policy, procurement, estates and support roles. Pay and conditions are set separately for military and civilian staff.

Is it a rewarding career?

Many people find it rewarding. You get training, structure and a strong sense of purpose. Military life can be physically and mentally demanding; civilian roles offer public service with Civil Service-style terms. It's a big commitment in the forces, so it helps to go in with your eyes open.

What kind of work do you do?

You might be in a combat, engineering, medical or support role in the forces, or in a policy, project or technical role as MOD Civilian. Select an organisation above to see roles and use the calculators for pay and progression.
