About the NHS

What is the NHS?

The NHS is the UK’s publicly funded health service. It employs staff across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in hospitals, GP practices, community services, mental health and many other settings. Most clinical and many non-clinical roles are on national pay frameworks such as Agenda for Change.

Is it a rewarding career?

Lots of people find it deeply rewarding. You’re often working directly with patients or supporting those who do. Pay and conditions are set nationally, so you get clear progression and entitlements. It can be intense and emotionally demanding, so support and work-life balance matter.

What kind of work do you do?

Roles range from nursing, midwifery and allied health to medicine, science, admin and estates. You might be in a hospital, GP surgery, ambulance service, or community team. Full time, part time and flexible working are common, and many roles offer development and career paths.
