Notice and redundancy in the public sector

If your role is at risk, you may receive notice pay for a defined period and, in some cases, statutory redundancy pay based on age and length of service. Many public sector exits use local schemes, pension terms or voluntary packages that differ from the statutory minimum.

What this tool shows

Notice pay from your weekly equivalent salary times notice weeks. Optional statutory redundancy using standard age multipliers (half a week per year under 22, one week from 22 to 40, one and a half weeks at 41+). We also show minimum statutory notice length as a comparator.

What it does not include

Tax, pension strain, benefits, compromise agreements, enhanced redundancy schemes, TUPE, or union-negotiated deals. Speak to HR and consider Acas redundancy guidance.

How this estimate worksNotice weeks and statutory redundancy

Weekly pay is gross annual pay divided by 52. Notice pay is weekly pay times the notice weeks you enter.

Statutory redundancy (optional) uses the standard age multipliers: half a week per year under 22, one week per year from 22 to 40, one and a half weeks per year at 41 and over. We also show the statutory minimum notice length as a comparator (1 week if under 2 years, then 1 week per year up to 12 weeks).

Tax, benefits, pension strain, compromise agreements and employer-specific schemes are not included.

Common questions

Is statutory redundancy pay the same as my public sector exit package?

Often no. Councils, NHS trusts, schools and Civil Service departments may offer enhanced redundancy, pension strain payments or voluntary exit schemes above the statutory minimum. Use this tool as a baseline comparator before speaking to HR.

How is weekly pay calculated?

We divide your gross annual salary by 52 to get a weekly figure for notice pay and statutory redundancy. Some employers use a 12-week average or cap weekly pay at a statutory limit for redundancy. Payroll rules take precedence.

Does notice pay include tax and pension?

No. Notice pay is usually taxable earnings. Pension contributions, benefits in kind and compromise agreement terms are not included. See Acas redundancy guidance for your options.
