Use this when you are weighing a promotion, lateral move or sector change. Pick two roles to see typical mapped-band mid-point basic pay side by side. Figures are illustrative national dataset mid-points, not offers.

Comparing roles honestly
A higher mid-point does not always mean better take-home. Allowances, pension contribution rates, London weighting and unsocial hours can change the picture.
What this tool uses
Each role’s typical mapped band from our national pay datasets, using the middle spine point (or mid-range if there is no spine). That is a planning anchor, not your payslip.
What to do next
Open pay progression for each role to model years on the spine, then take-home and allowances. For timing a promotion, use career decisions on the role you are leaving or joining.
How this estimate worksMid-point basic pay only
Roles without a reliable national band mapping are omitted from the list. GP partners, dentists and some practice roles stay on guide-only tools instead.
Always confirm current rates with your employer circular, BMA, Police Federation, STPCD or NHS Employers as appropriate.
Common questions
What does role compare show?
Illustrative full-time basic pay mid-points for two roles using each role’s typical mapped band from our national datasets. It is a quick side-by-side check before you open pay progression or promotion calculators.
Why is this not the same as a promotion calculator?
Promotion timing tools model when you move bands and accumulate earnings over years. Role compare only shows today’s mid-point basic pay for two roles. Use career decisions on your role page for timing scenarios.
Are allowances and take-home included?
No. London weighting, HCAS, unsocial hours, TLR and pension contributions are excluded. Open each role’s allowances and take-home calculators for a fuller picture.
