Understand your annual leave

The Annual Leave Calculator allows you to look at your annual leave entitlement by sector, service and hours worked. Enter your contracted hours and length of service to see illustrative leave in days and hours. Part-time contracts are pro-rated; bank holidays are shown separately where your sector adds them on top of annual leave.

Example scenario

Priya, staff nurse (Band 5)

3 years on AfC, 30 hours/week (0.8 FTE), Leeds

She’s dropping to 0.8 after shared parental leave and needs to know how many days she can book before the summer, and whether bank holidays still count on her new rota.

In the Staff Nurse annual leave calculator, she might see:

  • 21.6 days annual leave
  • 6.4 days bank holidays
  • 129.6 hours to book (pro-rata)

Illustrative only. Rota, carryover and local agreements can change the picture. Always confirm with HR.

What to verify with HR

  • Your exact contractual entitlement and any local agreement
  • How bank holidays apply if you work part-time or compressed hours
  • Carryover, purchase or sell-back rules if applicable

About this calculator

What does the annual leave calculator do?

It shows annual leave entitlement by sector: typical days and hours, pro-rata for part-time, plus bank holidays. We use common frameworks (e.g. NHS, Civil Service, NJC) so you can see illustrative entitlements for your situation.

Who is it for?

We cover leave for staff in health (e.g. NHS Agenda for Change), central government (e.g. Civil Service), local government (e.g. councils, housing), education (e.g. schools teachers and support staff) and more. Pick your sector above or go to your organisation to find the right calculator.

Always check your employer

Entitlements are set by your contract. Use this tool as a guide; confirm with your employer or HR.
