Consultant and GP pay are not on AFC; those figures are for comparison only. Registrar is shown at Band 6 for illustration; many medical registrars are on the junior doctor contract.
- Tax year 2025/26 (6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026). England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland uses different income tax bands.
- Income tax: personal allowance £12,570 (tapered above £100k), basic 20% to £50,270, higher 40% to £125,140, additional 45% above.
- National Insurance: primary threshold £12,570, 8% on earnings up to £50,268, 2% above. Pension contributions don't reduce NI (relief at source).
- Pension: enter your member contribution % if you know it (e.g. from your payslip). Public sector schemes use tiered rates; we use a single % for simplicity. Student loan and other deductions aren't included.

What is a Healthcare Assistant?
A Healthcare Assistant (HCA) supports nurses and other staff with personal care, observations, mobility and daily living. They work in hospitals, care homes and the community, often on Band 2 or 3. No registration is required but many gain NVQs or equivalent.
Is it a rewarding career?
HCA roles offer direct patient contact and a route into nursing or other professions. Pay and progression depend on trust and band. Many progress to Band 3 (e.g. senior HCA) or train as nurses.
