Your pay continues while you are off sick
Members of the armed forces are not on a full pay and half pay sick pay scale, so there is no figure to calculate here. Your pay normally continues for as long as you are off sick or injured (Manual of Service Law, JSP 830, chapter 20). It can be forfeited only if your own conduct caused or contributed to the sickness or injury and you have been convicted of, or found guilty at a summary hearing of, a service offence for that conduct. Statutory Sick Pay does not apply to members of the armed forces.

Frequently asked questions
Do I keep my pay when I am off sick?
Yes, normally. The Manual of Service Law (JSP 830, chapter 20) says a service person who is absent through sickness or injury continues to be paid for the length of the absence. There is no full pay and half pay scale like the ones most civilian public sector staff have.
When can pay be stopped while I am sick?
Only in narrow cases. Under regulation 3 of the Armed Forces (Forfeitures and Deductions) Regulations 2009, pay for a period of sickness can be forfeited if your own conduct caused or contributed to the sickness or injury and you have been convicted of a service offence for it, or a charge has been proved at a summary hearing.
Does Statutory Sick Pay apply?
No. Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) does not apply to members of the armed forces in their capacity as such (Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992, section 161(2), and section 157(2) of the Northern Ireland Act).
Why is there no calculator on this page?
Our sick pay calculators show how many months of full pay and half pay a scheme gives at your length of service. Service pay does not drop on a set timetable, so there is nothing to work out.
Does this apply to MOD civilian staff?
No. Ministry of Defence civil servants follow Civil Service sick pay, which, on current terms, builds up with length of service. This page is about serving members of the armed forces.
About this role
What is a Senior Rank?
A Senior Rank is a non-commissioned service person with more experience. Pay is on the armed forces pay scale.
Typical demands, progression and balance
Senior ranks offer leadership and variety. Pay and conditions depend on service and role. Progression to warrant officer or commission is common.
What sick pay am I entitled to?
This page does not calculate a sick pay figure, because your pay does not drop on a set timetable while you are off sick. The guide on this page explains when it can stop.
