Chief Constable Sick Pay Entitlement Calculator

Police officers in England and Wales get the same sick pay from their first day: up to 6 months on full pay, then 6 months on half pay, in any 12 months. This calculator shows that entitlement for a Chief Constable under Police Regulations 2003 (Annex K). Unlike most staff schemes, it does not build up with service.

  • Police officers of every rank, from their first day: full pay for six months in any 12-month period, then half pay for six months (Police Regulations 2003, regulation 28 and Annex K). There is no service step. Paid sick leave in the 12 months before your absence starts is deducted, so this is the most you could get. Your chief officer can extend full or half pay in a particular case. PCSOs and other police staff have a different scale.
  • Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) does not come on top: regulation 31 deducts it from an officer's full pay.
  • The calculator shows months, not pounds. The FAQ below converts them for your rank.

Guide for Chief Constable

This guide summarises occupational sick pay for Chief Constable under Police pay (England & Wales) at Police. Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is usually paid as part of occupational sick pay, not on top of it.

Sick pay for Chief Constable

As Chief Constable at Police, occupational sick pay usually follows Police Regulations 2003 (Annex K). Entitlement does not depend on length of service: from your first day, illustrative entitlement might be up to 6 months on full pay and 6 months on half pay in a rolling period. Self-certification is often allowed for the first seven days; a fit note is commonly required after that.

Fit notes and rolling periods

Self-certification is often allowed for the first seven days. Some employers use a rolling period (for example four years) that limits how much full and half pay you can use. Check your policy for qualifying service and evidence requirements.

Example scenario

Frequently asked questions

Does my sick pay depend on length of service?

Not under Police Regulations 2003 (Annex K). You can get up to 6 months on full pay and 6 months on half pay from your first day, whatever your length of service. Paid sick leave in the 12 months before your absence starts is deducted from that.

How does the 12-month look-back work?

When an absence starts, paid sick leave from the previous 12 months is counted first. If you had 2 months on full pay in that time, you would have up to 4 months on full pay left, then half pay.

Can my force extend sick pay?

Yes, in a particular case. Your chief officer can decide to extend full pay beyond 6 months or half pay beyond 6 months.

Is Statutory Sick Pay paid on top?

No. Regulation 31 deducts SSP from your full pay, so it is part of what you receive. SSP lasts up to 28 weeks from the start of an absence, so it runs out early in the half pay months.

What is 6 months' full pay in pounds for a Chief Constable?

The calculator shows months, not pounds. At £188,656, the Group 3 Chief Constable rate from 1/9/2025, 6 months on full pay is about £94,328 and 6 months on half pay about £47,164, before tax and pension.

Do PCSOs get the same?

No. PCSOs are police staff, and their sick pay builds up with service under police staff terms. The PCSO sick pay calculator on this site shows that scale.

Why is the result the same whatever years I enter?

Because Police Regulations 2003 (Annex K) gives the same entitlement from your first day. The years box is there because many other schemes on this site build up with service.
