Assumptions and pay data
Pay data: School Teachers' Pay (England). Support (NJC SCP 5–12): £26,427 to £29,542 over 8 pay points, rates from 1/4/2026. Checked 9/10/2026.
- Tax year 2026/27 (6/4/2026 to 5/4/2027): this take-home estimate is for the current tax year. Income tax, National Insurance and pension use 2026/27 rules. England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland uses different income tax bands.
- Gross pay from bands: Uses salary figures from our datasets (e.g. AfC, STPCD, NJC). Each dataset notes its pay-scale year; figures may match an earlier pay award until the site data is refreshed. Your net result is still modelled for 2026/27 tax.
- Income tax: personal allowance £12,570 (tapered above £100k), basic 20% to £50,270, higher 40% to £125,140, additional 45% above.
- National Insurance: primary threshold £12,570, 8% on earnings up to £50,270, 2% above. Pension contributions don't reduce NI. We use the net pay arrangement, as the main public sector schemes do: pension comes off before income tax, but not before NI.
- Pension: pre-filled with the 2026/27 member rate for your role's usual scheme at the salary shown (one rate on all pensionable pay, picked by how much you earn). Enter the rate from your payslip if it differs. Student loan and other deductions aren't included.

Frequently asked questions
What does this take-home pay calculator do?
It estimates your net (take-home) pay for the current tax year, 2026/27 (6/4/2026 to 5/4/2027), using income tax, National Insurance and pension rules for that year. Gross salary comes from the pay figures in our datasets (the pay-scale year on each dataset may vary; some sectors still show an earlier pay settlement until we refresh them). You can use your band and years in band to set gross, or enter a custom amount. Scotland has different income tax bands; this model is for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Are the tax and NI rates correct for 2026/27?
We use the main 2026/27 rates: personal allowance £12,570, basic rate 20% to £50,270, higher 40% to £125,140, additional 45% above; NI primary threshold £12,570, 8% to £50,270, 2% above. Rates and thresholds can change, so check gov.uk for the latest.
Why is my actual take-home different?
Your payslip may include student loan repayments or other deductions, and your pension rate can differ from the one we pre-fill (for example if you work part-time, are in a different scheme, or your scheme sets the rate from last year's pay). Use this as an illustrative guide only.
Do you include pension contribution tiers?
Yes. Most public sector schemes (NHS, Teachers', Civil Service alpha, LGPS, police and fire) charge one member rate on all your pensionable pay, and the rate depends on how much you earn. We pre-fill the 2026/27 rate for your role's usual scheme at the salary in the calculator, and it follows the salary until you type your own. If your payslip shows a different rate, enter that.
Do you store my information?
Your calculator inputs and results stay in your browser and are not stored. We only collect your name and email if you choose to give them, for example to download your results or sign up for email updates. We store them with MailerLite, our email provider, along with the page you were on. See our privacy policy.
What about Scotland?
Scotland has different income tax bands and rates. This calculator uses England, Wales and Northern Ireland rates. For Scotland, use an official calculator or your employer's payslip.
